AQ40Lft_angleIntroduction

The Sudan dyes Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III and Sudan IV all belong to the compound group named Azo-dyes. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has listed these dyes to be considered a possible carcinogen. The EU has released a commission decision 2005/402/EC to ban such Sudan dyes as food additives.

The goal of this project is to evaluate the performance and versatility of an automated QuEChERS extraction for determination of Sudan dyes in food. Liquid Chromatography coupled to triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was employed for the detection of Sudan dyes in agricultural commodities. Quantification was based on matrix-matched calibration curves for each commodity. The automated extraction streamlines the QuEChERS Method while providing suitable analytical results falling in the method for all target compounds.
